Research

Dr Kevin Guyan is a Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and director of the Gender + Sexuality Data Lab. He is also an Affiliate of the Edinburgh Futures Institute.

Kevin is a leading scholar in critical data studies and datafication, particularly LGBTQ data. In 2022, he authored Queer Data: Using Gender, Sex and Sexuality Data for Action, which has become a touchstone for academic work, policy and practice on LGBTQ data internationally. His work on queer data is multi-disciplinary and has shaped policy decisions on gender, sex and sexuality data in Scotland, the UK and around the world.

Between 2021 and 2024, Kevin worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow on an international project investigating gender equity policies in the film and TV industry.

Kevin is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland, sits on Young Scot’s Data Advisory Group and chairs the board of the LGBTI human rights charity Equality Network.

Kevin is the author of the books Rainbow Trap: Queer Lives, Classifications and the Dangers of Inclusion (Bloomsbury Academic, 2025) and Queer Data: Using Gender, Sex and Sexuality Data for Action (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022).

Consultancy

Kevin is an experienced researcher on diversity, equality and inclusion topics, particularly in relation to gender, sex and sexuality in the UK. He sits on several DEI Advisory Groups and has worked with governments, businesses, arts organisations and universities on a range of DEI projects.
